Ways in Writing a Sonnet
A sonnet is a classical way of writing a poem with 14 lines. It has developed during the earliest period of poem writing. It is one of the many types of poems. Some of the known ancient poets have used this kind of poem writing for their poems. Along the years, the procedures on how to do this has been changed and updated.
For the ones who are wondering how they can write the old format of a sonnet, here are the steps on how to:
The first thing we are going to do is to choose for a topic to write. Usually, this will depend on what inspires us the most. Poems are all about the writer's inspiration, and it is a way to creatively put to words the feelings that he is having at the moment. Make sure that the subject you are going to choose is worth writing about for you. This way, you will not have difficulty writing it. Some writers only get the difficult part when they are not that inspired to write.
Next thing is to divide the ideas into sections. Remember, we have to write for a 14-lined poem. We would not want a poem that says the same things over and over along the lines. The idea or the topic must be divided. 14 lines are very little compared to other kinds of poems. Make sure that you express all your thoughts and ideas with all those lines.
Sonnet writing uses a quatrain pattern that has to be followed. The pattern has to be ab-ab-cd-cd-ef-ef. Also not about the parameter that is used. The poem has a certain length. Make sure as the quatrains go, the ending words rhyme. Traditionally, the last sections are written in couplet. Meaning it is all rhyming at the end.
Modern poets have already changed the rules in writing a sonnet. Most of the modern sonnets today are all free written. They made their own rules and guidelines in writing. There are some sonnets that don't even rhyme at all. Some are still following the guidelines, but already changed some of the rules of it. This is probably due to the transformation of writing along the ages. Still, the old ones are highly noted until today and it is still being used by literary authors. The ones we study in schools and universities are of the old pattern.
